16th - 21st April 2009 - ANTIGUA CLASSICS |
| |
I spent a vigourous week sketching the 2009 Classic Regatta at Antigua, West Indes.
This involved 4 days following the racing yachts on a fast chase boat, sketching furiously on my newly-designed waterproof Drawing Machine. I´ve developed this contraption to provide rolls of dry paper with storage for charcoal & chalk, all in a waterproof wooden case. This enables me to do what I enjoy best: to respond immediately to the fast-moving subject as it tears past at 12 knots. Drawing at such speeds in a rough sea is a challenge in itself and the results are the raw and vital soul for future watercolours. This was its first sea-trial and now the final version is being built of carbon-fibre.
Some of these drawings can be seen HERE To see the finished watercolours just as soon as they are completed click HERE
Following the enormous success of "Chasing The Breeze´ at the Portland Gallery, London, these new works will be shown by Hirschl & Adler Galleries, New York at Art Hamptons, Long Island 9th-12th July 2009 and at my next major show in New York in June 2010.

19th MARCH - 9TH APRIL 2009 CHASING THE BREEZE |
| |
This sell-out exhibition of vigourous new watercolours of Classic Superyachts is now closed.
These paintings are a celebration of the fabulous synthesis of traditional beauty and breathtaking speed which has inspired me enormously, and which has lightened the gloom of economic downturn and the British winter.
This is a major departure from my usual milieu of architecture; these works originate from the 2008 racing seasons in Falmouth & St Tropez.
The works in the show and more recent sailing paintings can be seen HERE or at THE PORTLAND GALLERY website.

A collection of watercolours of the of UAE & Oman was a featured exhibit at the Art & Antiques Fair in the Madinat Arena, Jumeirah, Dubai. The centrepiece of this show on the Majlis Gallery stand was the biggest watercolour ever painted of a Middle Eastern subject. At 85 inches (215 cm) in length this is one of the largest watercolours ever painted on a single sheet of paper.
